"Su Embroidery"- Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage

Su embroidery is the first of the four famous embroideries in China, which is famous for its exquisite expression and lifelike embroidery patterns. You must want to ask where the name of Su embroidery came from. Next, let me give you the answer.

In China, there is a rich area called Jiangsu. According to Liu Xiang's Shuo Yuan in the Western Han Dynasty, Su embroidery clothing appeared in the state of Wu (now Jiangsu area) as early as the Spring and Autumn period more than two thousand years ago. From ancient times to the present, Jiangsu is one of the richest areas in China, with fertile land, mild climate, rich people and high silk production. Embroidery is inseparable from sericulture and filature, so it is also called silk embroidery. Jiangsu's superior geographical environment and colorful brocade have created favorable conditions for the development of Su embroidery. It used to be the general name of embroidery in eastern Jiangsu, among which Suzhou embroidery is the most popular, so now Su embroidery has become the general synonym of Jiangsu embroidery.

Su embroidery has beautiful patterns, elegant color, unique style, and distinctive local characteristics. It has 13 kinds of stitches, the most famous of which are twining stitch, plain stitch, and random stitch. Next, I'll give you a brief introduction to the three common stitches:

Twining stitch also called winding stitch,it refers to the stitch of embroidery with oblique short lines wound around patterns. It is stitch from one side to the other side, the direction should be consistent, the stitch should be uniform and fine, and the edge should be neat.

Plain stitch is one of the basic techniques of embroidery and the basis of all kinds of stitches. The thread organization of plain stitch is arranged evenly and neatly, the threads should not overlap or expose fabric in embroidery.

Random stitch changes the law of traditional stitches, uses long and short intersecting threads and the technique of applying color by layer to express the pattern. It has a large display space in stitch and use of color, uses multi-color embroidery thread to form the color of the pattern layer by layer, and the intersecting threads can show the vivid image of the pattern.

The wonderful thing about Su embroidery is that when you appreciate it, you seem to be able to see the distance of mountains and rivers by naked eyes, and you can feel the majesty of the pavilion, vividness of characters, flowers, and birds. Su embroidery imitation painting embroidery and photo embroidery's lifelike artistic effect is famous all over the world.
